Three people, a shelf of drives, and a producer who keeps asking where last spring's factory b-roll went. The cheapest fix is whichever tool covers the one job you are short of: Finder tags and a spreadsheet, a drive cataloguer, a shot-level visual index, or a full media asset manager (MAM). Ten options are priced below, every figure read from the vendor's own page on 2 September 2026.
StoryFolder is ours, and it sits in the visual-index row. It indexes the videos you give it and points at your files where they already are, so it does not manage shared storage, track which drive is which, ingest in batches, or make proxies your NLE can cut with. On those jobs it loses to a drive cataloguer and to a real MAM, and the table says so.

What does "cheap MAM alternative" need to replace?
A MAM bundles seven jobs, and the cheap options each cover two or three of them. Work out which ones you are actually short of before you compare anything:

The last two are where the money is, and they set how the bill is charged: per user, per month, and often per terabyte as well. Both of those meters are visible in the table below. A three-person shop that shares one NAS and trusts each other is paying for governance it does not need.

Which low-cost tools are credible for a three-person team?
Ten, in four bands: included with the operating system you already run; roughly $10 to $25 a month for a single-seat cataloguer or index; $20 to $45 per user per month for a shared database; and $65 or more per user per month for a full MAM. Two of those rows are routinely quoted wrong elsewhere. Kyno reads as annual on the vendor page today rather than perpetual: a year of updates, after which your copy keeps working and stops improving. What is the genuinely free setup?
Disciplined folder names plus Finder tags and Spotlight, or one spreadsheet, and it holds up for as long as the archive is small and one person still remembers the naming rules. Airtable's free plan gets you thumbnails and a gallery view on top of that for nothing.

What you give up is the picture. A spreadsheet row says a clip exists; it does not show you the shot, and it will not tell you the drone pass is unusable because the horizon tilts. Keep the free setup at one row per clip or per drive. A row per shot means typing hundreds of rows for a single reel, by hand, from memory, and that is the version of this system that gets abandoned in week three.
The other cost is silence. Rename a folder, retire a drive, or move a file across to an exFAT scratch disk, and nothing tells you the sheet is now wrong or the tags have been stripped.
Which option fits each failure mode?
Match the tool to the sentence you keep saying out loud.
- "I know we shot it, I just cannot find the drive." Finder tags and a spreadsheet if you have a handful of drives, Fast Video Cataloger at $9.90/month if you have a shelf of them and run Windows. StoryFolder cannot help here: it records the file path of what you imported and knows nothing about volumes, so a drive that has never been plugged in is invisible to it.
- "I can find the drive, but not the shot." This is the visual-index tier: Fast Video Cataloger, or StoryFolder if you want your own fields on each shot and search across every project in one library. Neither moves your media, and StoryFolder's library lives on one machine with no sync behind it. - "I need to browse in place, transcode and hand off to the NLE." Kyno, at $159 Standard or $349 Premium for a year. StoryFolder has no round-trip: nothing comes back out as an FCPXML, XML, AAF or EDL for your timeline.
- "Three people need the same library, and I need to control who deletes things." iconik or axle.ai, and budget properly, because Standard seats are $65 per user per month and axle.ai Cloud is $20 per TB per month. Those are the only two rows in the table built to hold the media as well as the description, and StoryFolder holds neither the media nor the accounts. Most three-person teams are in cases 1 and 2 at once, which is why the honest answer is often two cheap tools rather than one expensive one: something that knows where drives are, and something that knows what is on them.

Which prices should you check with the vendor?
CatDV, Adobe Bridge, Avid perpetual and Teams licences, Blackmagic Cloud, and Vimeo. Every figure circulating for those comes from somewhere other than a first-party page, and second-hand prices for post software are where comparison articles go wrong. Ask the vendor and get it in writing.
