Custom fields Pro
Custom note fields are how you make StoryFolder your own. Whether you're studying cinematography, deconstructing ads, or planning a shoot, you can design exactly the data structure you need.
Custom fields are available on the Pro and Business plans.
How do I create a custom field?
- Open Preferences (Cmd+, on Mac, Ctrl+, on Windows).
- Switch to the Notes & Data pane.
- Pick the category you want the field to live in — or click New Category first.
- Click + Add Field in the category.
- Enter a name, pick a field type, and (for dropdowns and tags) add the available options.
- Close Preferences. The new field appears in the notes panel and is ready to use.
What can I make a custom field for?
Anything. Common examples:
- Cinematography: Lens, Aperture, Camera Angle, Camera Movement, Shot Size.
- Lighting: Key Light Position, Quality (hard / soft), Color Temperature.
- Production planning: Location, Talent, Wardrobe, Equipment, Budget.
- Marketing analysis: Hook Type, CTA Strength, Brand Visibility.
- Storytelling: Story Beat, Character Arc, Theme.
- Editing technique: Cut Type, Pacing, Transition.

How do I delete a custom field?
In Preferences → Notes & Data, click the field. There's a delete control in the field's settings. Deleting a field removes it from every shot in every project — there is no undo.
Will deleting a field destroy my notes?
Yes — deleting a field deletes the data stored in it across all your projects. If you just want to stop seeing a field, hide it from the Notes & Data Fields toggle in the header instead of deleting it.
Can I rearrange my fields?
Yes. In Preferences → Notes & Data, you can:
- Drag fields up and down within a category.
- Drag entire categories up and down to reorder.
The new order is reflected in the notes panel immediately.
Do custom fields apply to all my projects?
Yes. Custom fields are global to your account — they exist across every project. When you create a new project, the same fields are waiting for you.
Do custom fields appear in exports?
Yes. Custom fields are exported in:
- Shot list spreadsheets — as columns.
- PDF storyboards — alongside the shot.
- Share links — visible to viewers.
You can hide a field from the current view if you don't want it in this particular export.
