Splitting & merging shots

The AI shot detector is good, but rarely perfect. You'll always want to make a few hand adjustments. That's what the Split and Merge tools are for.

How do I split a shot?

Use this when the AI joined two shots into one.

  1. Press C (or click the scissors icon) to activate the Split tool.
  2. Hover over the shot you want to split. The tool will preview the cut location.
  3. Click on the frame where you want the new shot to begin.
  4. A new shot is created starting at that frame.
  5. Press D to return to the default tool.

Frame-accurate splitting

Open the video player and scrub to the frame where the new shot should begin. The Split tool will use the same frame the player is showing.

How do I merge shots?

Use this when the AI broke one continuous shot into two — or when you want to treat several consecutive shots as a single section for note-taking.

  1. Press J (or click the merge icon) to activate the Merge tool.
  2. Click the first shot of the range you want to combine.
  3. Click the last shot of the range. Every shot in between is merged into one.
  4. Press D to return to the default tool.

You can also merge by selecting the range with Shift-click in the default tool, then clicking Merge selected shots in the context menu.

Can I un-split a shot?

Yes. Use the Merge tool to combine your accidentally-split shot back into one.

Can I un-merge a section?

Yes. Use the Split tool to cut a merged section back into individual shots.

What happens to my notes when I split or merge?

  • Splitting copies the original shot's notes to both new shots. Edit them independently afterwards if needed.
  • Merging keeps the notes from the first shot in the range. Notes on the later shots are preserved on the underlying shot data but will only show up again if you split that section apart.

Will splitting / merging change my exports?

Yes — exports reflect your current shot list:

  • PDF storyboards and image exports use whatever shots are visible.
  • Shot list spreadsheets export one row per shot or section.
  • Video clip exports produce one clip per shot or section.

That makes Split / Merge the main way to control how granular your exports are.

What if the entire video looks wrong?

If you're constantly splitting or merging, the AI sensitivity is probably set wrong for this clip. Instead of doing it shot by shot, drag the AI shot detection sensitivity slider to redo detection at a different threshold.
