Adding notes to a shot
Notes are the heart of StoryFolder. Every observation you make about a shot — the framing, the dialogue, the lighting setup, the meaning — gets captured in the notes panel.
How do I add a note to a shot?
- Click the shot you want to take notes on. It becomes the selected shot.
- The notes panel on the right column updates to show the active note fields.
- Click into any field and start typing.
- Your notes save automatically as you type — there's no Save button.
What fields are available by default?
StoryFolder ships with a thoughtful set of default fields:
- Key Takeaways — what's the heart of the matter?
- Interpretation — your perspective on the shot.
- Story — the narrative beat or plot moment.
- Action — what action is driving the scene.
- Messaging — what brand or thematic message is conveyed.
- Emotional Tone — what feeling does the shot evoke?
- Visuals / Cinematography — what visual techniques are at play?
- Performance — what stands out about the performers.
- Sound & Music — how does the audio shape the moment.
- Symbolism — symbols, metaphors, hidden meaning.
- Other Notes — your catch-all.
- Tags — quick categorization labels.
You can turn off any of these and add your own. See Default note fields and Custom fields.
How do I see only the fields I care about?
Click the Notes & Data Fields button in the editor header to toggle individual fields on and off without deleting them. Hidden fields keep their values — they just don't show up while you work.
How are my notes saved?
Notes save automatically to StoryFolder's local database the moment you finish editing a field. There's no "save" or "discard" action — they're always written.
Can I take notes on the whole video instead of a shot?
There's no separate "video-level" note field today, but a common pattern is:
- Select the first shot.
- Use a field like Other Notes or a custom field called Video Overview to write overarching context.
- Or merge the entire video into one section with the Merge tool and take notes there.
How do I take notes on multiple shots at once?
See Notes across multiple shots.
What about formatting — can I use bold or links?
Text fields accept plain text. We'd rather you focus on the substance of your notes than the formatting. If you need to share a styled write-up, export to PDF.
