Import your first video
Time to see what StoryFolder does. The first import is short — pick a clip you'd like to study, and within a minute or two you'll be looking at a fully detected storyboard.
What kind of video should I start with?
For your very first import, we recommend something short and visually distinct:
- A 60–90 second ad you admire (Apple, Nike, Dollar Shave Club).
- A music video.
- A movie trailer.
- A YouTube tutorial you're studying.
Long features work great too — they just take longer to process the first time.
How do I import from YouTube or Vimeo?
- From the StoryFolder home screen, find the URL bar that reads “Paste a YouTube or Vimeo link”.
- Paste the link to a public video on YouTube (including Shorts) or Vimeo.
- Press Enter or click Import. StoryFolder will fetch the video and start processing.
See Import from YouTube or Vimeo for the full reference, including supported URL formats and private/unlisted videos.
How do I import a video file from my computer?
- From the home screen, click + New in the top-right and pick Import from File….
- Choose any
.mp4,.mov,.mkv,.avi,.webm, or.mtsfile. - Click Open. StoryFolder starts processing right away.
See Supported formats for the full list.
What happens during processing?
You'll see a progress screen with a thumbnail of the video and a percentage. Under the hood, StoryFolder is:
- Pulling or transcoding the video to a workable format.
- Generating thumbnails for every frame it needs.
- Running AI shot detection to find every cut.
- Building the interactive storyboard.
Most short videos finish in under a minute. Longer features can take a few minutes.
What do I do once it's done?
When processing finishes, you'll see a checkmark and a View Storyboard button. Click it.
You'll land in the Edit view — your storyboard. From here you can:
- Click any shot to add notes.
- Use the tools on the left to split or merge shots, or pick custom thumbnails.
- Toggle between storyboard, list, and grid views with B / L / T.
- Share your work with a single click.
Don't worry about getting it perfect — see Your first week for a relaxed walkthrough.
Help! My import failed.
A few common reasons:
- The link is to a private or paywalled video.
- The file is corrupt or in an unsupported codec.
- Your internet connection dropped during a URL import.
