Custom thumbnails

By default, StoryFolder uses the first frame of each shot as its thumbnail. That works most of the time — but sometimes the first frame is a motion blur, a partial pan, or a totally unrepresentative split-second. The Frame Selector tool lets you choose a better frame.

How do I pick a custom thumbnail?

  1. Press F (or click the frame icon in the left toolbar) to activate the Frame Selector.
  2. Click the shot whose thumbnail you want to change.
  3. Use the video player to scrub to the frame you want.
  4. Click Set as thumbnail. The shot now uses that frame everywhere.
  5. Press D to return to the default tool.

The new thumbnail is used in the storyboard, list, and grid views — and in all exports.

Why would I change a thumbnail?

  • The first frame of a shot is dark, blurry, or a tail of the previous shot.
  • You want the climax of the shot to be visible at a glance.
  • You're building a poster-style storyboard for a client and want the most striking frame as the cover for each section.

Can I reset a custom thumbnail?

Yes — open Frame Selector, click the shot, and pick Reset to default. The first-frame thumbnail returns.

Do custom thumbnails affect exports?

Yes. Whatever frame is shown in the editor will be the frame used in:

  • PDF storyboard exports.
  • Image exports.
  • Shared web links.
  • Print views.

Can I bulk-set thumbnails?

Not yet. Each thumbnail is set on a per-shot basis.
