App won't open
If StoryFolder refuses to launch — bouncing in the Dock, an instant crash, or just nothing at all — work through these checks in order.
On macOS
Make sure the app is in your Applications folder
If you ran the app directly from the disk image (.dmg), some macOS versions block updates. Drag StoryFolder to your Applications folder and run it from there.
Right-click → Open the first time
If macOS blocks an unidentified developer warning, right-click (or Control-click) the app icon and pick Open. Confirm in the dialog. macOS remembers the choice from then on.
Check the Console for errors
- Open Console.app (search Spotlight for "Console").
- In the left sidebar, click Crash Reports.
- Look for a recent
StoryFolderentry. If you see one, that's the smoking gun — send the file to support.
Restart your Mac
If StoryFolder was force-quit and a background helper is stuck, a restart clears it.
On Windows
Try running as Administrator
Right-click the StoryFolder shortcut and pick Run as administrator. This isn't required for normal use, but it can bypass a permission glitch.
Check Windows Event Viewer
- Press Win+X and pick Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs → Application.
- Find a recent error from
StoryFolderorStoryFolder.exe. - Note the error code and send it to support.
Reinstall
If the install is corrupt, uninstalling and re-downloading often resolves it.
- Go to Settings → Apps and uninstall StoryFolder.
- Download a fresh installer from storyfolder.com/download.
- Run the installer.
Your local data (projects, settings) is in %APPDATA%\StoryFolder and is not removed by uninstalling. Your work is safe.
Both platforms
Make sure you're not at the very edge of disk space
StoryFolder needs a small amount of free space to launch and read its database. If your drive is full, free some space and try again.
Check your antivirus
Some aggressive antivirus tools quarantine Electron apps incorrectly. Whitelist StoryFolder.app (Mac) or StoryFolder.exe (Windows) and try again.
Update macOS / Windows
Very rarely, a missing system library on outdated OS versions prevents launch. Make sure you're on a supported OS — see Install the app for requirements.
