Activated machines
When you connect the desktop app on a computer, that machine takes one of your activation slots. You can review your active machines and deactivate any of them at any time.
How many machines can I activate?
Depends on your plan:
| Plan | Active machines |
|---|---|
| Free | 1 |
| Basic | 1 |
| Pro | 1 |
| Business | 3 |
If you need more, see Compare plans or contact support.
How do I see my activated machines?
Go to storyfolder.com/account and click Machines in the sidebar. You'll see a list with:
- The machine name (or generic Mac / Windows PC label).
- The activation date.
- A Deactivate button.
How do I deactivate a machine from the web?
- Go to Machines on your account page.
- Find the machine you want to remove.
- Click Deactivate.
- Confirm.
The slot is freed. If StoryFolder is open on that machine, it'll return to the Sign In screen the next time it checks in.
How do I deactivate from inside the desktop app?
- Open StoryFolder.
- Open Preferences (Cmd+, on Mac, Ctrl+, on Windows).
- Switch to the Account pane.
- Click Deactivate Machine.
The app immediately returns to the Sign In screen.
What happens to my data when I deactivate?
Your local data is safe — your shot lists and notes stay in your StoryFolder app data folder. Sign back in on the same computer and everything comes right back.
I lost the computer I activated on — how do I free that slot?
Go to Machines on your account page and deactivate the missing computer from there. You don't need physical access to the machine.
How do I move my StoryFolder to a new computer?
- Install StoryFolder on the new computer. See Install the app.
- If you're at your machine limit, deactivate the old computer's slot — either from inside the desktop app on the old machine, or from Machines on your account page.
- On the new computer, click Connect your account and sign in.
Your projects move with you
Your shot lists and notes were saved to your account and the local cache. On the new computer, your published storyboards appear immediately. Local-only projects will need to be re-imported from the source video.
My desktop app says “maximum activations reached.” What now?
That means every slot is occupied. Free a slot from your account page (or from another computer's Preferences), then click Connect your account again on the new machine.
Need more machines than your plan allows?
