Categories

A category is a named group of note fields. Categories help you keep dozens of fields organized β€” and let you collapse, hide, or reorder a whole set at once.

How are categories used?

In the notes panel on the right side of the editor, fields are grouped under their category. A typical setup might look like:

  • πŸ“ Story β€” Story, Action, Emotional Tone, Symbolism
  • 🎬 Cinematography β€” Shot Size, Lens, Camera Angle, Movement
  • 🎨 Lighting β€” Quality, Key Direction, Mood
  • 🏷️ Tags & Misc β€” Tags, Other Notes

You can collapse a category's heading to hide its fields temporarily without removing them.

How do I create a new category?

  1. Open Preferences β†’ Notes & Data.
  2. Click + New Category at the bottom.
  3. Name it (e.g. Cinematography).
  4. Optionally drag it up or down to reorder it among other categories.
  5. Add fields by clicking + Add Field inside the category.

How do I rename or delete a category?

In Preferences β†’ Notes & Data, click the category title to rename it inline. Click the β‹― menu next to it to delete the category.

WARNING

Deleting a category also deletes the fields inside it and all the values stored for those fields. There is no undo. If you only want to hide the category, collapse it from the notes panel instead.

How do I move a field between categories?

In Preferences β†’ Notes & Data, click and drag the field. You can drop it anywhere β€” including a different category β€” and the order updates immediately.

Can I have a category with no fields?

Yes, but it'll just show as an empty heading in the notes panel. Useful as a placeholder while you're designing a new section.

Can I collapse categories?

Yes. In the notes panel, click the category header to collapse or expand it. There's also a Collapse all / Expand all toggle in Preferences β†’ Notes & Data if you want to start fresh.

Do categories appear in exports?

Yes. PDF and spreadsheet exports group fields under their category headings, so the document reads the way the editor looks. Share links use the same grouping.
