Delete your account
If you'd like to leave StoryFolder, you can request a complete deletion of your account and data.
How do I delete my account?
Account deletion is currently done by support to make sure we get it right:
- Contact support from the email address on your StoryFolder account.
- Subject the email "Delete my account".
- Confirm in the message that you understand the deletion is permanent.
- We'll respond within one business day to verify your identity and complete the deletion.
A self-service deletion button on the account page is on the roadmap.
What gets deleted?
- Your account record (email, name, password hash).
- All your projects, shot lists, and notes.
- All your published share links. URLs stop working immediately.
- Your activated machines and license records.
- Your Stripe customer record (after a brief period for financial records).
What about local data?
After deletion:
- The data on our servers is gone.
- Data still in StoryFolder's local app data folder on your computer is up to you. You can delete the StoryFolder app and its app data folder (see Install the app for paths). If you don't, no harm — without a valid account, the desktop app can't use the data.
How long does deletion take?
The user-facing deletion is immediate after we verify your request. Backend purging happens shortly after, with a brief retention window for compliance and operational reasons (e.g. financial records that legally must be retained for several years).
Will my published links still work after deletion?
No. Published share links are tied to your account and disappear when the account is deleted.
If a viewer has a copy of the link, they'll see a "not found" message.
What if I just want to cancel, not delete?
Plenty of people prefer to keep their account around as a Free plan rather than deleting outright. To stop paying without losing your work:
- Cancel your subscription — you drop to the Free plan at the end of your paid period.
- Your projects, notes, and share links stay intact.
- You can re-subscribe any time.
Account deletion is for when you're truly done.
What if I change my mind after deletion?
Once deleted, your data can't be restored. You're welcome to sign up again with the same email, but it'll be a fresh account.
Anything else?
If you have specific data-deletion requirements (GDPR right-to-erasure, contractual obligations to a client), tell us in your deletion request. We'll make sure the right pieces are addressed.
