Install the app
StoryFolder runs as a native desktop application on macOS and Windows. All of the heavy lifting — shot detection, transcoding, exporting — happens on your machine.
How do I install StoryFolder on a Mac?
- Go to storyfolder.com/download and click the macOS button. The download is a
.dmgfile. - Open the
.dmgfile from your Downloads folder. - Drag the StoryFolder icon into your Applications folder.
- Eject the disk image and open StoryFolder from Applications, Launchpad, or Spotlight.
- The first time you open it, macOS may ask you to confirm. Click Open.
Apple Silicon and Intel
StoryFolder ships a universal build that runs natively on both Apple Silicon (M-series) and Intel Macs.
How do I install StoryFolder on Windows?
- Go to storyfolder.com/download and click the Windows button. The download is a
.exeinstaller. - Open the installer from your Downloads folder.
- If Windows SmartScreen shows a warning, click More info → Run anyway. StoryFolder is digitally signed but new releases sometimes trip the filter for a few days.
- Follow the prompts. Default install location is fine.
- Launch StoryFolder from the Start menu.

How do I get app updates?
StoryFolder checks for updates automatically every time it launches.
- When a new version is available, you'll see a banner inside the app.
- Click Download Update to fetch it. The app keeps running while it downloads.
- When it's ready, click Restart Now to install.
You can also check manually under About → Check for updates.
You can choose between two release channels under Preferences → Updates:
- Beta (recommended): stable, public releases.
- Alpha: previews of unreleased features. Expect occasional rough edges.
Where does StoryFolder store its files?
The app stores its local database, cached thumbnails, and settings in your user's app data folder:
- macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/StoryFolder - Windows:
%APPDATA%\StoryFolder
You usually never need to touch these folders directly. If support asks you to send logs, see Send us your logs.
