Install the app

StoryFolder runs as a native desktop application on macOS and Windows. All of the heavy lifting — shot detection, transcoding, exporting — happens on your machine.

How do I install StoryFolder on a Mac?

  1. Go to storyfolder.com/download and click the macOS button. The download is a .dmg file.
  2. Open the .dmg file from your Downloads folder.
  3. Drag the StoryFolder icon into your Applications folder.
  4. Eject the disk image and open StoryFolder from Applications, Launchpad, or Spotlight.
  5. The first time you open it, macOS may ask you to confirm. Click Open.

Apple Silicon and Intel

StoryFolder ships a universal build that runs natively on both Apple Silicon (M-series) and Intel Macs.

How do I install StoryFolder on Windows?

  1. Go to storyfolder.com/download and click the Windows button. The download is a .exe installer.
  2. Open the installer from your Downloads folder.
  3. If Windows SmartScreen shows a warning, click More info → Run anyway. StoryFolder is digitally signed but new releases sometimes trip the filter for a few days.
  4. Follow the prompts. Default install location is fine.
  5. Launch StoryFolder from the Start menu.

How do I get app updates?

StoryFolder checks for updates automatically every time it launches.

  • When a new version is available, you'll see a banner inside the app.
  • Click Download Update to fetch it. The app keeps running while it downloads.
  • When it's ready, click Restart Now to install.

You can also check manually under About → Check for updates.

You can choose between two release channels under Preferences → Updates:

  • Beta (recommended): stable, public releases.
  • Alpha: previews of unreleased features. Expect occasional rough edges.

Where does StoryFolder store its files?

The app stores its local database, cached thumbnails, and settings in your user's app data folder:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/StoryFolder
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\StoryFolder

You usually never need to touch these folders directly. If support asks you to send logs, see Send us your logs.
