Organize videos with folders
Folders are where videos live. A video sits in one folder or in none, folders nest inside folders, and opening one shows everything underneath it — not just its direct children.
A folder is StoryFolder's filing, not your disk's. Moving a project between folders never moves, renames or copies the video file, and StoryFolder does not manage where your originals live.
Create a folder
- In the library rail, use New folder on the Library section.
- Name it.
- It appears in the rail, with a count of the videos underneath it.
To make a folder inside another, right-click the parent and choose New subfolder.
Move a video into a folder
Drag the video onto the folder in the rail. One video per drag, and a toast confirms where it went.
A video that was unfiled leaves the root list and appears in the folder. It is still in All items — that is the library root, and it shows everything.
You can also import straight into a folder: open it first, then import.
Dragging a video out of the Trash onto a folder restores it and files it in one motion, so it lands live in the folder rather than staying deleted.
Nest or move a folder
Drag a folder onto another folder to nest it, and onto the root to bring it back out. A folder cannot be dropped inside itself or inside its own subtree — the drop is simply refused rather than producing a loop.
Opening a folder expands the tree to reveal it, so a folder deep in a structure never leaves you looking at a collapsed parent wondering where you are.
Open, search and link to a folder
Opening a folder shows that folder and everything nested under it, and it narrows search and filters to the same subtree. From All items the same query covers your whole library.
That difference is the one to internalise: a search that "finds nothing" from inside a folder often finds plenty from All items.
Every folder has its own address in the app, so you can keep a link to one and come back to it.
Rename a folder
Double-click the rail row to rename in place, or right-click and choose Rename.
Renaming affects the folder only. The videos inside it, their metadata and their files are untouched.
Move a folder to the Trash
Everything inside goes with it
Right-click a folder and choose Move to Trash. If it has anything in it, StoryFolder asks first and says what will happen: everything inside the folder goes to the Trash with it and is hidden from the rail until you restore the folder.
Nothing is deleted from your disk. Your video files stay exactly where they are.
An empty folder goes straight to the Trash without asking, because there is nothing to lose. Restoring a folder from the Trash brings back what went with it.
Folder practices that scale
- Organise by boundaries that will still be true next year — a client, a series, an account.
- Keep the tree shallow enough to scan in the rail. Depth costs you every time you file something.
- Use video metadata for facts that cut across folders. Status is a field, not a folder — a video can only be in one folder, but it can carry every field you define.
- Use collections for selects, and quick filters for conditions that change.
